Statement:
“The project proposes new model of residential architecture in Boyle Heights. The building extends the depth and openess of the hill to the neighborhood. Also it fragments the hill into smaller components to make it easily accessible and navigatable similar to distinct urban sectors embedded into a unifying city fabric. The project aims to break the site into 3 areas - on the hill, under the hill and connecting space between them. Each has unique architectural and residential qualities targeting different programs for tenants, workers, neighbor under one single roof.”
Boyle Heights, Los Angeles
The site has beautiful open scenary around the hill. But it was only available for few houses on the hill. I wanted to share the scenary to the neighborhood.
Its unique size – the biggest residential building in Boyle Heights – makes it akin to a city: a three dimensional network of paths, squares, neighborhoods, activities and views unfolding through providing opportunities for social and cultural encounters.
The Neo Angeleno
This typology refers to young and middle aged angelenos that has been living in Los Angeles for most, if not all of their life time. They see a trend in new culture that is happening in Boyle Heights, where the area is developing in an artistic manner, with the juxtaposition of redeveloped and upcoming renovating districts and the authenticity of its Los Angeles identity. The Neo Angeleno finds the weird combinations to be radical and avant garden, and would like to immerse himself within the neighbourhood. Similar to the residents that are residing in arts district nowadays.
Economic Description
These Young and Middle aged men or women have either made fortune through other means than as la- bour as they could be considered as between middle and upper class from their income rate. Young individuals that wish to resides are not of the work- ing class too, they would have inherited income form their families or are young entrepreneurs.
Living Description
The clash of the authenticity of Boyle Heights and modern luxury renovation would be the main interest of this client group. These individuals demands high standards of built quality of their living quarters. Large spaces are also much preferred, such as loft apartments and semi outdoor spaces. Individuals would commute by their vehicles or work in their units. Due to the strong contrast of the life style of the occupants and their neighbours, privacy and safety is also crucial for these clients.
Urban Void with Hill
The site has huge void space near hillside with very limited circulation in residential area of Boyle Heights, Los Angeles.
Social Context
Co-living and co-working space are emerging topography of housing as a solution for current housing market(system) - communal, creative, vibrant, inexpensive, temporary(flexible).
Urban Context
Boyle Heights is an up-rising area along with the up-rising of LA where is one of the most vibrant and creative city for many of digital nomads and young professionals all around the world. Boyle Height is located within urban network system which make the area accessible to most creative clusters of LA – Downtown LA, Glendale, Echo Park, Hollywood, etc.

The project proposes a new model of residential architecture in Boyle Heights. It provides unique architectural and residential qualities targeting different programs for tenants, workers, neighbor under/over one single roof. Therefore, the building extends the depth and openess of the hill to its neighborhood; the volumized urban circulations fragment the hill into smaller components to make it occupiable while separating private spaces and public spaces. And the elevated void space becomes a rooftop park providing a beautiful scenery of Boyle Heights.
